Budgets and Financial Controls

Define spending guardrails while retaining context and limitations.

Budgets help a workspace monitor spend against defined financial expectations. They are governance controls, not AWS spending limits or autonomous remediations.

Configure a budget

Choose the supported scope, period, measure, currency and amount. A budget against a workload requires adequate cost allocation. Review which costs remain outside the scope and which billing period is authoritative.

Interpret variance

A budget overrun shows a comparison between budget and observed or modeled spend under the selected definition. It does not independently establish why the change happened. Use Explorer and cost-change analysis for context.

Ownership and response

Assign an owner to review deviations. Where alerts or actions are enabled, make their delivery and approval state visible; do not claim notification delivery until the outbox/provider state confirms it.

Important limitations

Budgets do not stop AWS resources or guarantee that future spend cannot exceed the amount. Partial-month data and delayed CUR exports affect what a current-period comparison can establish.

Limitation

CoreFinOps budgets are governance controls — they do not place hard limits on AWS spending or modify any AWS resource. Only your AWS account billing controls can cap actual spend.
